The four decisions
1. Where it sits: hips or thigh
Hip harnesses are the standard, worn like underwear or a belt, and give you the most natural range of motion. Thigh harnesses mount on the wearer’s thigh, which sounds niche until you realize they open up positions where a hip harness cannot reach, and they work regardless of the wearer’s anatomy or mobility. Plenty of people own both.
2. Strap style: two strap, three strap, or brief
Two strap leaves the crotch open, which means the wearer can feel things and use a second toy. Three strap adds a center strap for stability at the cost of that access. Brief style looks like underwear and distributes pressure best of all, which is what you want for anything long.
3. Material
Leather molds to the body, lasts decades, and gets better with wear. Nylon and neoprene wash easily and cost less. Leather if you expect to keep it; fabric if it needs to go in a machine.
4. O-ring size
The single most common mistake. The ring must match the base of the toy, not its widest point. Too large and the toy slides; too small and it will not seat. Most good harnesses ship with interchangeable rings for exactly this reason, and that feature is worth paying for.
