Silicone lube is the one people switch to and never switch back from, right up until they use it on a silicone toy and quietly destroy it. It lasts longer than anything else, survives water, and needs a fraction of the volume. It also has exactly one hard rule, and breaking it is expensive. Here is when silicone wins and when it absolutely does not.
Why silicone lasts so much longer
Water based lube absorbs into skin and evaporates, which is why you reapply. Silicone does neither. The molecules are too large to absorb, so it sits on the surface and stays slick until you wash it off with soap.
That means a few drops do the work of a handful of water based, and the glide does not change halfway through. For long sessions, anal, or anything in water, that difference is not subtle.
The one hard rule
Silicone lube degrades silicone toys. Like dissolves like: over repeated contact the lube softens and pits the toy’s surface, leaving it tacky and permanently damaged. It is not instant and it is not reversible.
So: silicone lube is fine on skin, glass, stainless steel, and latex or polyisoprene condoms. Keep it away from silicone toys, and if you are not certain what a toy is made of, use water based. A patch test on the toy’s base tells you within a few minutes if you really want to know.
Where silicone genuinely wins
- Shower and bath. Water rinses water based lube away instantly. Silicone shrugs it off. This is the use case with no substitute.
- Anal. Durable glide with no reapplication break is worth a lot here. Pair with glass or steel toys, or use a dedicated anal formula.
- Massage into sex. Silicone doubles as a body glide and does not get sticky as it dries, because it does not dry.
- Sensitive skin. The good formulas are three or four ingredients with no glycerin, no preservatives, and nothing to react to.

Pjur essentially invented the modern silicone lube category, and Basic is the no-nonsense entry into it. A little goes an absurdly long way, which makes the price per use lower than it looks.
Wicked Ultra Silicone: the smooth one
Slightly richer feel than Pjur, with the vitamin E and olive leaf extract Wicked puts in everything. A good pick if pure silicone feels too slippery to you.
Sliquid Silver: best for sensitive skin
Four ingredients. That is the entire formula. Sliquid’s approach to silicone is the same as their water based line, which is to leave out everything that could possibly cause a reaction.

Concentrated formulas where a couple of drops genuinely suffices. The Woman version is tuned slightly lighter. Both come in larger bottles that last a very long time given how little you use.

Using it well
- Start with less than you think. Genuinely. Silicone users routinely over-pour on the first try and end up with a slip hazard.
- Soap to remove it. Water alone will not shift it, which is the same property that makes it work.
- Mind the sheets. Silicone can stain fabric where water based will not. A towel solves it.
- Check your toy material first. Glass, steel, ABS plastic: fine. Silicone: no. When unsure, use water based.
- Condoms are fine. Silicone lube is safe with latex and polyisoprene. It is oil you have to avoid there.
FAQ
Is silicone lube safe for the body? Yes, and it is among the most inert options available. It does not absorb, which is exactly why sensitive skin often tolerates it better than water based formulas with glycerin.
Can I use it with a silicone toy just once? Damage is cumulative rather than instant, but there is no reason to risk a $150 toy when water based works fine.
Hybrid lubes, then? Hybrids blend water and silicone for a middle ground. Most are toy safe, but check the label rather than assuming.
