Lube and toys have one rule between them, and breaking it permanently ruins the toy rather than causing a mild problem. It takes thirty seconds to learn and it is the single most expensive thing people get wrong in this category.
The rule
Silicone lube degrades silicone toys. Like dissolves like: over repeated contact the lube softens and pits the surface, leaving it permanently tacky. It is not instant, it is not reversible, and it will happen to a two hundred dollar toy just as readily as a twenty dollar one.
So with silicone toys, which is most good toys: water based or hybrid only.
What pairs with what
- Silicone toys: water based or hybrid. Never pure silicone lube.
- Glass, steel, ABS plastic: anything, including silicone lube. This is one of the quiet advantages of glass and steel.
- TPE and soft strokers: water based only. Silicone degrades these too.
- Latex condoms: water or silicone, never oil.
- Not sure what a toy is made of: water based. Always the safe answer.
What makes a good toy lube specifically
Thicker than standard. A gel stays where you put it instead of running off a curved surface, which is a real difference during toy use.
Glycerin free. Less residue, less irritation, and no sugar sitting on a toy surface. See our sensitive skin guide.
Cleans off easily. Anything that dries tacky is annoying on skin and worse on a toy you then have to scrub.

Toy-Safe Lube: Free Discreet Shipping
Wicked Toy Love, sixteen dollars
Formulated as a gel specifically for toy sessions. Clings to curves rather than running off. The purpose built answer.
Sliquid Naturals H2O, twenty two dollars
The benchmark water based lube. Glycerin free, paraben free, safe with everything. If you own one bottle, own this.
Wicked Simply Hybrid, fifteen dollars
Hybrid, so it lasts longer than pure water based while staying toy safe. Our hybrid guide explains the blend.
Sliquid Organics Silk
Sliquid’s hybrid, with their usual minimal ingredient approach.
Pjur Aqua, twenty dollars
Denser than most water based formulas and closer to a silicone feel, while staying safe with silicone toys.
Wicked Cleene
Because lube and cleaning are the same conversation. Twelve dollars.
How much
More than you think, reapplied more often than you think. Water based absorbs, so a session that started well can go dry halfway. Keep the bottle within arm’s reach rather than across the room, which sounds trivial and is the difference between reapplying and pushing on.
FAQ
Can I use silicone lube on a silicone toy just once? Damage is cumulative rather than instant, but there is no reason to risk it when water based works fine.
Are hybrids really toy safe? From reputable brands, yes. Check the label rather than assuming across brands.
What about oil based? Never with latex, hard to clean off porous materials, and generally the wrong answer here.
How do I test an unknown lube on a toy? A dab on the base, wait an hour, check for tackiness.
