Wax play is one of the few kinks where using the wrong product is not a matter of taste but a matter of burns. An ordinary dinner candle melts around 60 degrees Celsius. A proper low temperature play candle melts around 40. That twenty degree gap is the entire subject, and it is why "just use a normal candle" is advice from people who have not tried it.
The temperature rules
Candle wax melting point depends almost entirely on the wax:
- Soy and paraffin blends made for play melt around 40 to 45 degrees C. Warm, dramatic, safe on skin.
- Standard paraffin dinner candles melt around 55 to 65. This burns.
- Beeswax melts around 62 to 65. Also burns.
- Anything with additives, dyes or fragrance can burn hotter and irritate skin regardless of base wax.
Buy candles made for this. They cost about the same as nice dinner candles and they are formulated to a completely different melting point.
Distance and where it lands
The second variable you control is height. Wax cools as it falls, so a candle held high delivers noticeably cooler wax than one held close.
Start at around 60cm and work closer if you both want more. Twenty centimetres is intense even with a proper low temp candle.
Where it lands matters as much: back, chest, stomach and thighs are the safe zones. Avoid the face and eyes entirely, avoid genitals unless you are experienced and using the coolest possible wax, and be careful over anywhere the skin is thin.
Before you light anything
- Test on your own inner forearm first. Every candle, every time, including a new one from a brand you already use.
- Put a bowl of cool water and a towel within reach. Not across the room.
- Protect the surface. An old sheet or a drop cloth. Wax gets everywhere and does not come out of good linen.
- Shave or plan around body hair. Wax plus hair equals an unplanned waxing, which is a different scene than the one you booked.
- Never leave a lit candle unattended, and never near restraints or anything flammable. If someone is restrained, fire safety becomes your entire responsibility.
- No wax on broken skin, and none over recent tattoos or piercings.

Aftercare matters more here than the wax does. Temperature play leaves people physically warm and emotionally wide open. Blankets, water, and time.

Wax play pairs naturally with blindfolds, because not seeing the drop coming is most of the sensation, and with restraints if fire safety is properly handled. It also works alongside temperature contrast: a chilled glass toy against skin that has just been warmed is a specific and memorable trick.
FAQ
Can I use a normal candle if I hold it high enough? Please do not. Distance helps but the starting temperature is too high and one careless moment causes a real burn.
Does it hurt? Low temp wax is warm and startling rather than painful. Sharp pain means the wax is too hot or too close.
How do I get wax out of sheets? Scrape the excess, then iron through brown paper to absorb the rest. Or use a drop cloth and skip the problem.
Is coloured wax safe? From makers who formulate for play, yes. Dyes in ordinary candles can irritate.
