Anal prep is the subject people research most anxiously and where the advice online is worst. The short version: most of what people do is unnecessary, some of it is actively harmful, and the genuinely useful preparation takes about ten minutes and involves no equipment.
What most people actually need
Empty your bowels normally beforehand. An hour or two before, ideally. This alone handles the vast majority of the concern.
Shower. Soap and water externally, and a soapy finger just inside is genuinely sufficient for most situations.
That is it. The rectum is not a storage area, it is a transit passage, and it is usually empty. The anxiety in this category is considerably larger than the actual problem.
Douching, honestly
Douching is optional, useful for some people and some situations, and easy to overdo in ways that cause real problems.
- Plain lukewarm water only. Never soap, never anything scented. Soap inside the rectum causes irritation and cramping.
- Body temperature. Cold water cramps, hot water burns tissue you cannot see.
- Small volume, low pressure. A bulb, not a shower attachment. High pressure can injure the bowel wall, and shower kits are where the serious injuries in this category come from.
- Rinse until clear, then stop. Usually two or three passes. More is not better.
- Wait thirty to sixty minutes before playing so residual water clears.
- Not every day. Frequent douching strips the mucosal lining and disrupts the flora that protect you. Occasional is fine, routine is not.
What actually helps more
Diet timing. Eating lighter for a few hours beforehand does more than any amount of rinsing.
Fibre, generally. A consistent diet produces predictable results, which beats emergency measures.
Accepting that this is a bodily function. Occasional mess is normal, expected by anyone experienced, and considerably less of a problem than the anxiety about it. A dark towel handles it.

Prep and Anal Essentials
CleanStream Enema Bulb is the correct tool if you douche: small volume, controllable pressure, nothing like a shower attachment. Wicked Jelle Plus, Pjur Analyse Me and Sliquid Sassy are the lubes, and lube matters considerably more than prep does. Anal Adventures and LEVELZ beads for working up, covered in our training guide.
When to see a doctor
Bleeding, persistent pain, or anything that does not resolve within a day or two. Also worth flagging: if you need to douche extensively every time to feel comfortable, that is worth discussing rather than escalating the routine.
