Plug sizing is where most people either buy something too ambitious and abandon the category, or buy something so small it does nothing and conclude plugs are pointless. The useful range is narrower than the market suggests, and the number that matters is not the one printed largest.
The number that matters
Maximum diameter, not length. Length is almost irrelevant for a plug, which sits rather than moves. Diameter at the widest point determines whether it goes in and whether it stays comfortable.
A second number matters almost as much: neck width, the narrow part that sits between the sphincters. A plug with a wide bulb and a proportionally narrow neck stays put comfortably. One with little difference between them pushes out constantly.
The realistic progression
- Beginner: 25 to 30mm. Roughly a thumb. Where nearly everyone should start, and where plenty of people happily stay.
- Intermediate: 32 to 40mm. Noticeable fullness, still comfortable for extended wear.
- Advanced: 45mm and up. Months of progression, not weeks.
Worth saying plainly: bigger is not a goal. Comfort at a size you enjoy is the point, and chasing diameter is how people get injured. Our training guide covers the realistic timeline.
Shape matters as much as size
Tapered plugs enter gradually and are the most forgiving. Bulbous plugs have a defined widest point and pronounced neck, so they seat firmly. Graduated beads let one toy cover a range, which makes them better value than a single plug while you are still working out your size. Flared base, always, on everything.

Plugs and Beads by Size
LEVELZ Small 20mm at eighteen dollars is the correct starting size for almost everyone. Anal Adventures Platinum 10 gives a full graduated progression in one purchase. LEVELZ 30mm and 50mm and Anal Adventures Large are the later steps. Wicked Jelle Plus is the lube, and it is equipment rather than an accessory here.
Wearing one
- Warm up externally first, every time.
- Far more lube than you think, on the plug and at the entrance.
- Insert slowly, stop at resistance. The inner sphincter relaxes on its own timeline and cannot be instructed.
- Time limits. A few hours maximum, less for larger sizes. Remove if you lose sensation.
- Never sleep in one.
- Remove slowly. Faster coming out is a mistake people make once.
FAQ
How do I know my size? Compare to something you already know is comfortable, then go slightly under. You can always size up.
Why does mine keep pushing out? Neck too wide relative to the bulb, or the size is beyond where you are relaxed. Both are fit problems rather than technique.
Silicone, glass or steel? Silicone to start, warmer and more forgiving. Steel and glass add weight and temperature once comfortable.
Can I wear one out of the house? Physically yes, with a comfortable size. Start at home.
