What is genuinely different
- Front construction. The most significant difference. Well made pieces build in a pouch, gaff panel, or extra fabric so the garment sits flat and comfortably rather than straining. Improvised solutions are where most discomfort comes from.
- Hip to waist ratio. Standard women’s sizing assumes a difference that not every body has. Makers cutting for a straighter line produce garments that sit properly instead of gaping at the waist and pulling at the hip.
- Band and strap geometry on tops. Bralettes designed for a flatter chest sit differently. A standard bralette on a flat chest rides up, which is construction rather than fit.
- Length through the torso. Bodysuits and teddies cut for a longer torso stop the crotch pulling, which is the single most common complaint about off-the-rack bodysuits.
Buying without guessing
- Measure rather than size. Waist at the narrowest, hips at the widest, underbust, and torso length from shoulder through the crotch for bodysuits. Most independent makers work from these directly.
- Ask about the front panel. Makers who build one will say so explicitly. If a listing does not mention it, assume a standard flat gusset.
- Stretch lace over rigid. More forgiving on fit and considerably more comfortable for long wear.
- Made to order takes time. Two to four weeks is normal for handmade. Worth knowing before ordering for a specific date.
- Start with one well fitted piece. It teaches you more about what you want than three cheap ones.
