Vaginal dryness affects a large majority of people during and after menopause, and it also shows up with certain medications, breastfeeding, and some contraceptives. It is extremely common, genuinely treatable, and almost never discussed at the point where someone might actually buy something that helps.
Why it happens
Falling oestrogen thins the vaginal wall and reduces natural lubrication. The tissue becomes more fragile, less elastic, and slower to respond to arousal. That is a physiological change rather than a psychological one, which matters because people frequently assume it means they have lost interest.
Medications commonly implicated include some antidepressants, antihistamines, hormonal contraceptives and cancer treatments. Breastfeeding produces a temporary version of the same thing.
Lubricant versus moisturiser
This distinction matters and is rarely explained:
Lubricant is used at the time, for friction. It works immediately and washes off.
Vaginal moisturiser is used regularly, every two or three days, regardless of sexual activity. It rehydrates tissue over time rather than solving a moment.
For persistent dryness, a moisturiser used consistently does considerably more than lube at the moment. Most people only ever try the second.
What to look for
- Glycerin free. Glycerin draws moisture out of tissue that is already short of it, and it feeds yeast. See our sensitive skin guide.
- pH appropriate. Postmenopausal pH shifts, and formulations designed for this account for it.
- No warming, tingling or flavouring. Fragile tissue and stimulating additives are a bad combination.
- Silicone based for longer sessions, since it does not absorb and does not need reapplying, which reduces friction overall.

Gentle Formulas for Dryness
Pjur Med Natural Glide
The medical line, formulated specifically for sensitive and dry tissue. Unglamorous packaging, serious product, and the first thing we would suggest trying.
Pjur Woman Nude
No glycerin, parabens, perfume or preservatives. Genuinely minimal.
Wicked Aqua Sensitive and Sliquid H2O
Affordable glycerin free options. Sliquid in particular is pH conscious and widely recommended by clinicians.
Pjur Woman Concentrated Silicone
Silicone based, so it does not absorb and lasts through a whole session without reapplication. Worth having alongside a water based bottle. Keep it away from silicone toys, as our silicone guide explains.
Beyond lubricant
Pelvic floor work improves blood flow to the area and helps sensation. Our kegel guide covers this, with the caveat about hypertonic pelvic floors.
Regular arousal, solo or partnered, maintains tissue health. This is genuine medical advice rather than a sales line.
Longer warm up. Arousal takes longer after menopause and that is normal rather than a problem.
Talk to a doctor. Local oestrogen therapy is highly effective, low dose, and available on prescription. Nothing on this page substitutes for that conversation, and plenty of people spend years on lube when a prescription would resolve it.
FAQ
Is this permanent? Without treatment it generally persists. With moisturisers, local oestrogen, or both, it is very manageable.
Can I use coconut oil? It destroys latex condoms and is difficult to clear. Not recommended as a routine solution.
Does it mean my sex life is over? No. It means friction management became part of it, which is a logistics problem rather than a desire one.
Are toys safe with fragile tissue? Yes, with plenty of lubricant, smaller sizes, and body safe materials. Our materials guide covers what to insist on.
