Tail plugs sit at the intersection of anal toy and costume, which makes them one of the few products people buy for how they look on someone rather than how they feel. That dual purpose changes what matters: the plug still has to be a competent plug, and the tail has to survive being worn, moved in, and sat near. Plenty of products get one half right.
What to look for in the plug half
- A flared base, always. Non negotiable for any anal toy. On tail plugs the base also has to bear the tail’s weight without tilting.
- Body safe silicone or metal. The plug goes inside; the tail does not. Our materials guide covers the difference between something you can sterilise and something you cannot.
- A sensible size. Tail plugs are worn for extended periods rather than used for minutes. Size down from what you would pick for a session.
- The join between plug and tail. Glued tails come off. Screw-in or properly moulded joins do not, and a detachable tail also means the plug can be washed properly.
What to look for in the tail half
Real fur versus synthetic is the main decision. Real fur moves better and looks considerably more convincing; synthetic is cheaper, washable, and vegan. Both are valid, and the makers here offer both.
Weight matters more than length. A heavy tail pulls on the plug constantly, which is fatiguing and can work it loose. Longer is not automatically heavier, so check both.
Attachment method. Detachable tails let you clean the plug properly and swap tails on one plug. Permanently attached tails are simpler but limit both.

Tail Plugs From Independent Makers
Bunny tails, pink and white
Short, light, and the least demanding to wear because the tail weighs almost nothing. The sensible starting point if you have never worn one, and the most forgiving for extended wear.
White Sheep tail
Similar weight profile to the bunny tails with a different texture entirely. Sixty dollars.
Deer tail
Short and upright rather than hanging, which sits differently and is less prone to catching on things.
Cat tails, black and scarlet
Longer, heavier, and the most visually dramatic. Also the most demanding to wear for any length of time, so not the one to start with.
Golden Retriever and Grizzly Bear tails
The larger fur pieces. Substantial, striking, and worth being honest with yourself about how long you will actually want to wear something with that much weight on it.
Wearing one
- Work up with a plain plug first. If plugs are not already comfortable, add the tail later. Our anal beads guide covers the progression.
- Lube generously, reapply for re-insertion. A dedicated anal formula lasts longer, which matters for extended wear.
- Sit carefully, or kneel. This is the practical thing nobody mentions. Sitting down normally pushes the base, and a heavy tail behind you changes how you have to move.
- Time limit. A few hours maximum for most people, less with a heavy tail. Discomfort is the signal, not the clock.
- Never sleep in one.
- Clean the plug thoroughly after every use and keep the fur dry. Detachable designs make this considerably easier.
Caring for the tail
Fur, real or synthetic, does not want to be washed. Brush it, spot clean if needed, air dry fully, and store hanging rather than crushed in a drawer so it does not develop permanent kinks. A tail stored badly for six months looks like a tail stored badly for six months.
On petplay
Tails are usually part of something larger. If that is where you are heading, the surrounding gear matters as much: collars and leashes, cuffs, sometimes blindfolds. The same negotiation and aftercare conventions apply as anywhere else in kink, and a tail is often the least complicated part of it.
FAQ
How long can I wear one? A few hours for most people, with a light tail. Heavy tails, considerably less.
Will it fall out? Not with a correctly sized plug and a properly weighted tail. If it works loose, the plug is too small or the tail too heavy.
Can I wear one under clothes? The plug, yes. The tail, obviously not, which is why detachable designs exist.
Real or synthetic fur? Real moves better, synthetic washes and is vegan. Neither is wrong.
What size plug? Smaller than you would choose for a session, because this is about duration rather than intensity.
