Toys and Gels That Improve Oral (And the Ones That Do Not)

There is a small category of products aimed at making oral sex better, and it is dominated by two things: flavoured gels that taste like a scented candle, and "deep throat" sprays that are just mild anaesthetics with a marketing budget. A few products in this space genuinely work. Here is the honest sort.

What actually helps

Glide. The most underrated thing in this category. A slick gel reduces friction for the person giving, which is the actual limiting factor in most cases far more than taste is.

Taste management. Not making things taste like dessert, but neutralising the taste of unflavoured lube or latex, which is what most people actually object to.

Throat relaxation products. These are mild topical anaesthetics. They reduce the gag reflex by numbing, which works but comes with the same caveat as every numbing product: reduced sensation means reduced feedback.

What does not

Anything promising to eliminate a gag reflex entirely, anything claiming to change how you taste systemically, and heavily sugared flavoured products used anywhere internal. That last one is a genuine health issue rather than a preference, covered in our flavoured lube guide.

The picks

All Spicerack Selects, our in house shop, free discreet shipping.

GoodHead Slick Head Glide, Mint

The best product in this category and the one that gets the priority right: it is a glide first and a flavour second. Mint rather than confectionery, and slick enough to actually change the experience for the person giving. If you buy one thing here, buy this.

GoodHead Oral Delight Gel, Chocolate Mint

The flavour-forward version. Gel texture stays where you put it rather than running, and chocolate mint reads as deliberate rather than like sweets.

GoodHead Warming Head, Strawberry and Cotton Candy

Adds a warming effect activated by breath, which is the party trick this line is built around. Strawberry is the crowd pleaser, cotton candy is unapologetically novelty. Our warming guide covers the patch test rule, which applies here too.

Wicked Simply Hybrid Jelle

Not flavoured. A thicker hybrid gel for when glide matters more than taste, and toy safe if toys are involved.

Sliquid Naturals H2O

The unflavoured, glycerin free bottle to keep alongside. Flavoured gels are for oral; anything moving internally afterwards should switch to this. See our water based guide.

Technique beats products

Worth saying plainly, since we sell the products: nothing on this page matters as much as communication and pacing. A few things that genuinely help and cost nothing:

  1. Hands are part of it. The mouth does not have to do all the work, and combining reduces fatigue enormously.
  2. Positioning changes the angle more than any product does, and the angle is usually the actual problem.
  3. Breathing through the nose, slowly. Most gag response is panic response.
  4. Say what you want. Nobody can read minds, and this is the category where guessing wastes the most time.
  5. Break it up. Oral as a whole event rather than a stage in a sequence takes the pressure off everyone.

On barriers

Oral carries genuine STI transmission risk, which almost nothing in this category mentions. Flavoured condoms exist precisely for this, and dental dams for oral on a vulva or anus. Our condom guide covers the options, and flavoured barriers are the one place where flavour products and safety overlap usefully.

FAQ

Do throat sprays work? They numb, which reduces gag response for some people. They also reduce sensation and can transfer. The delay spray guide covers the same active ingredients and the same cautions.

Can flavoured gel go anywhere else? Not internally, if it contains glycerin or sugar. Switch products.

Do diet or supplements change taste? Marginally, temporarily, and far less than the products claiming it suggest. Hydration is the one that reliably matters.

Are these safe with condoms? Water based, yes. Check the label on anything oil based.
