Delay sprays are among the best selling products in this industry and among the least honestly marketed. The claims range from reasonable to absurd, the mechanism is simple, and the correct way to use them is almost the opposite of what most people do. Here is the version without the sales copy.
How they actually work
Almost every delay spray and cream on the market contains a mild topical anaesthetic, usually benzocaine or lidocaine at low concentration. Applied to the glans, it slightly reduces sensitivity, which for many people extends time to climax.
That is the entire mechanism. There is no hormone, no circulation effect, nothing systemic. It is localised, temporary numbing, and it works about as well as that sounds: genuinely useful for some people, useless for others, and counterproductive if overused.
The mistake almost everyone makes
Too much, too late. The instinct is to apply generously right before sex. This produces the two classic failures: so little sensation that arousal collapses entirely, and transfer to a partner, who did not ask to be numbed and will notice.
The correct approach:
- Apply ten to fifteen minutes before, not immediately before. It needs time to absorb.
- Use less than the bottle suggests. One or two sprays. You can always add.
- Wipe off the excess after absorbing. This is the step that prevents transfer and it is the one everybody skips.

How long does it last? Typically thirty to sixty minutes, tapering.
Is it safe? Topical benzocaine at these concentrations is well established. Do not use it on broken skin, do not use it if you have a known anaesthetic allergy, and do not combine it with anything else numbing.
