Hybrid lube is the compromise that actually works, which is rare enough to be worth a page. Water based dries out and needs reapplying. Silicone lasts but cannot touch silicone toys. Hybrid blends the two: most of silicone’s longevity, and still safe with the toys you own.
How the blend works
A hybrid is predominantly water based with a small percentage of silicone emulsified into it. That silicone content slows evaporation and adds slip, while staying low enough that it does not degrade silicone toys the way pure silicone lube does.
The practical result: it lasts noticeably longer than water based, feels slightly richer, cleans up with water rather than needing soap, and stays toy safe. For most people most of the time, this is the correct default rather than either extreme.
The one caveat
Silicone content varies by brand and is rarely stated as a percentage. Reputable hybrids are formulated to be toy safe and say so explicitly. If a hybrid does not mention toy compatibility, patch test on the base of a silicone toy and check for tackiness after an hour before using it liberally. Our materials guide covers why that matters.

Hybrid versus the alternatives
Versus water based: lasts longer, feels richer, costs slightly more. Our water based guide covers when plain is better.
Versus silicone: shorter lasting, but safe with silicone toys and easier to wash off. See the silicone guide.
For anal: a dedicated anal formula is thicker and better suited.
FAQ
Is hybrid safe with condoms? Yes, latex and non-latex both.
Will it stain sheets? Less than pure silicone, more than water based. A towel solves it.
Is it safe with all toys? With reputable brands, yes. Check the label rather than assuming across brands.
Why is it not the default everywhere? Cost and shelf positioning, mostly. It is a better product than plain water based for most uses.
